I am commonly referred to as a folk artist, although I feel most comfortable with the term “self-taught” as in self-made, in the great American tradition. Define me as you will, I just try to make a good picture.

Carving Miss Liberty
“In this 2010 video, I am carving at the Ithaca Farmers’ Market as I have done for the past 33 years. I call the market my summer studio. Time spent there is important to getting my work seen. It’s like a craft fair every weekend only two miles from my home. Once people hear me tapping away they understand my work in a different more visceral way. I find it energizing to hear people’s reactions to my work and to answer the questions of budding woodcarvers. I’m happy to have an alternative to the gallery scene.”
